Abu Dhabi Energy Corporation, through the Emirates Water and Electricity Company, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Abu Dhabi Center for Waste Management Recycling, with the aim of establishing two plants to convert waste into energy in each of Abu Dhabi , And Al Ain.
According to the Emirates News Agency, upon completion of its construction, the capacity of the two plants is expected to convert approximately 1.5 million tons annually of municipal waste into energy, in addition to reducing carbon dioxide emissions together by about 2.5 million tons annually - equivalent to removing more than half a million cars. The Abu Dhabi plant is expected to be one of the largest waste-to-energy plants in the Middle East region.
The MoU was signed by Jasim Hussain Thabet, CEO and Managing Director of Abu Dhabi Energy Corporation; Othman Juma Al Ali, CEO of Emirates Water and Electricity Company; and Dr. Salem Khalfan Al Kaabi, General Manager of the Abu Dhabi Center for Waste Management Recycling.
The expected capacity of the first plant, which will be built in Abu Dhabi Industrial City / ICAD / in the Mussafah area, will reach approximately 900 thousand tons of waste annually, and will produce a maximum of 90 megawatts of electricity annually, which is equivalent to providing electric power to 22.5 thousand homes in the country The United Arab Emirates, which makes it one of the largest waste-to-energy facilities in the region. This plant is also expected to reduce the emission of approximately 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to removing more than 300,000 cars from the road.
As for the second station that will be built in Al Ain, its expected capacity will reach approximately 600,000 tons of waste annually, and it is expected that it will produce a maximum of 60 megawatts of electricity annually, equivalent to providing electric power to 15 thousand homes in the United Arab Emirates. This plant is also expected to reduce the emission of approximately one million tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to removing more than 200,000 cars from the road.
Jassim Hussain Thabit, CEO and Managing Director of Abu Dhabi Energy Corporation, said: Signing the Memorandum of Understanding is an important step in the efforts of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi aimed at achieving the UAE Vision 2021, which aims to convert 75% of waste into energy instead of burying it.
