Jane Castor, the mayor of Tampa Bay, Florida, has announced that she will begin accepting her salary in Bitcoin (BTC), according to multiple sources who attended the Florida Bitcoin and Blockchain Summit.< /p>
Castor announced last Friday, the morning of the second day of the summit being held at the Amalie Arena in downtown Tampa. According to people who attended the event, crypto-lending platform Celsius Network will facilitate the mayor's Bitcoin payments.
The news quickly spread across the crypto-to-Twitter community, with Bitcoin advocate Anthony Pompliano noting that a total of four US mayors have... They are starting to accept at least part of their salary in Bitcoin.
Castor's decision appears to have been influenced by Francis Suarez of Miami, who recently became the first mayor to accept a portion of his salary in Bitcoin. New York City's newly elected Mayor Eric Adams quickly followed suit by announcing that he would accept his first three salaries entirely in cryptocurrency.
The newly elected Suarez and Adams have been vocal about turning their cities into crypto hubs. After his election, Adams announced that New York City would become the center of the cryptocurrency industry.
Despite facing several bouts of extreme price volatility this year, Bitcoin returned to record levels in late October and continued to trade above $60,000. Their higher prices have been accompanied by increased acceptance by regulators and financial institutions, as well as merchants and payment processors.
