The number of tourists received by the country reached about 3.5 million, according to Ghada Shalaby, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Antiquities in Egypt, in an interview with Reuters, and stated that the sector’s revenues ranged between 3.5 billion and 4 billion dollars in the first half of 2021.
According to Arab Net, tourism revenues were about four billion dollars in 2020, down 70%, from 13.03 billion the previous year, amid the Covid-19 pandemic that severely damaged the sector.
Ghada said we expect an increase in tourists in the coming period between 45 and 60%, compared to last year... The average spending of a tourist per night is about $95.
Tourism contributes up to 15% of Egypt's economic output and is a major source of foreign exchange.
Egypt closed hotels in March 2020 due to the Corona crisis, then reopened them after about two months with about 25% of the capacity, and that percentage later increased to 50%.
