About 900,000 workers in Spain have lost their jobs since March 12, when the country announced public health isolation measures due to the outbreak of the Coruna virus.
According to Reuters, social security data showed that more than half of that number were temporary workers.
The number of people officially registered as unemployed in the country rose to 3.5 million in March, the highest level since April 2017.
In Spain, confirmed cases of coronavirus passed the 100,000 mark on Wednesday.
With the exception of Italy, the virus has killed more people in Spain than anywhere else in the world, prompting the authorities to impose a general isolation that has virtually paralyzed economic activity in the country. A survey showed that Spain's manufacturing sector is heading for recession after shrinking in March at the fastest pace since 2013.
Health officials said that on Wednesday, the country set a record number of deaths of 864, taking the total number of deaths to 9053 cases, while the number of injured rose to 102,136 people. However, officials said the increase in deaths as a percentage came less than in previous days.
