Addis Ababa officially started the second filling of the reservoir of the Ethiopian dam, yesterday, Monday, and Mohamed Abdel-Aty, the Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, received yesterday an official letter from his Ethiopian counterpart stating the start of Ethiopia is in the process of filling the second year of the Renaissance Dam reservoir.
The Ministry of Irrigation said that Abdel-Aty sent an official letter to the Ethiopian minister informing him of Egypt's categorical rejection of this unilateral measure, which is a clear and serious breach of the Declaration of Principles agreement, and is a violation of laws And international norms that govern projects built on the common basins of international rivers, including the Nile, and regulate the exploitation of its resources, are agreements and charters that obligate Ethiopia to respect Egypt’s water rights and interests and prevent harm to it.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued: "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also sent a letter from the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation to the Ethiopian Minister, to the President of the United Nations Security Council to brief the Council - which will hold a session on The issue of the Renaissance Dam next Thursday - with this dangerous development, which once again reveals Ethiopia’s bad faith and its insistence on taking unilateral measures to impose a fait accompli and to fill and operate the Renaissance Dam without an agreement that takes into account the interests of the three countries and limits the damages of this dam to the two downstream countries, which will increase the situation Crisis and tension in the region, and will lead to the creation of a situation that threatens security and peace at the regional and international levels.”
Ethiopia has taken several accelerated steps since the start of the construction of the dam until now, and among those steps was the signing of an agreement of principles between it and both Egypt and Sudan, which stipulates that the dam be filled with conditions Do not harm the interests of Egypt and Sudan. But Ethiopia hastened - unilaterally - to take steps that the two downstream countries see as harmful to their interests and will have consequences for life in all its forms.
