Oil prices jumped more than 3 percent in early Asian trading, with Brent crude surpassing $90 a barrel, as escalating tensions between the United States and Iran in the Middle East disrupted energy shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Brent crude futures jumped $2.75, or 3.12 percent, to $90.85 a barrel by 22:02 GMT. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose $2.56, or 3.10 percent, to $85.05 a barrel, according to Reuters data.

US forces launched attacks on Iran for the ninth consecutive day on Monday, as the confirmed death toll of US military personnel in the renewed fighting rose to three, and concerns grew about shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States and Iran have intensified their attacks as a temporary ceasefire agreement signed last month collapsed, and the conflict over control of the Strait of Hormuz has worsened, increasing the risk of a return to full-scale hostilities.
