U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Utilities and Financials sectors led shares higher. However, losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close of trading in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.09%, the S&P 500 fell 0.16% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.31%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Travelers Cos Inc (NYSE:TRV), which rose 1.56% or 3.55 points to trade at 231.42 at the close. Meanwhile, IBM (NYSE:IBM) added 1.41% or 2.83 points to end at 204.11 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 1.37% or 2.20 points to 163.22 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which fell 3.38% or 1.45 points to trade at 41.48 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 3.33% or 0.67 points to end at 19.43 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was down 1.79% or 2.59 points to 142.07.
On the other hand, the best performance in the S&P 500 index was recorded by Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA), which rose by 4.18% to 219.41, Mondelez International Group (NASDAQ:MDLZ) also continued to rise by 4.17% and closed at 75.26, as well as Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which rose by 4.08% and closed at 100.73.
The worst performers today were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR), which fell 22.16% to 63.56, Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC), which lost 8.69% to settle at 73.26 and Molina Healthcare Inc (NYSE:MOH), which was down 6.96% to 331.24 at the close.
On the other hand, the best performers on the NASDAQ were WiSA Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:WISA), which rose 125.00% to 3.06, Faraday Future Intelligent Electric Inc (NASDAQ:FFIE) which rose 52.77% to 5.24 and 180 Life Sciences Corp (NASDAQ:ATNF) which rose 41.24% to 2.50.
The worst performers today were Athira Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:ATHA), which fell 78.43% to 0.61, BAIYU Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:BYU), which lost 73.02% to settle at 1.50 and Psyence Biomedical Ltd (NASDAQ:PBM), which fell 34.99% to 0.23 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1,445 to 1,379, while 88 ended unchanged. On the Nasdaq, 1,845 stocks declined, 1,469 advanced and 131 stocks ended unchanged.
Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) stock fell to a new all-time low, losing 22.16% or 18.09 to end at 63.56. Travelers Cos Inc (NYSE:TRV) rose to a new all-time high, rising 1.56% or 3.55 to 231.42. IBM (NYSE:IBM) rose to a new all-time high, rising 1.41% or 2.83 to end at 204.11. Athira Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:ATHA) fell to a new 3-year low, losing 78.43% or 2.22 to end at 0.61. Psyence Biomedical Ltd (NASDAQ:PBM) stock hit a new all-time low, falling 34.99% or 0.13 to $0.23.
