Social media giant Twitter has announced that it is expanding into the cryptocurrency space by assembling a team to look into decentralized applications, cryptocurrencies, and blockchain.
Interchain Foundation board member Tess Renerson will lead a team at Twitter that aims to increase adoption of cryptocurrencies, blockchain and decentralized technology, according to a tweet on Wednesday.
Renerson said her team will be working with Twitter's BlueSky Project on a decentralized social media platform as well as exploring how ideas from crypto communities can help us push the limits of what's going on. It is possible with identity, community, property and more.
The initiative called Twitter Crypto — not to be confused with Crypto Twitter, which generally refers to the platform's crypto user community — will hire additional members with engineering skills and product experience. . Renerson, who is based in Berlin, said she has no plans to leave Germany but will organize a distributed, multicultural team for the new project.
As I build the team, we will work to discover what cryptocurrencies can do for Twitter, as well as what Twitter can do for cryptocurrencies.

Twitter really understands cryptocurrencies (welcome BTC tipping and non-perishable tokens) but there's a lot more to explore here.
This announcement comes less than two months after Twitter launched its crypto-tip to its users through its Lightning Network using the Strike app.
The nearly 200 million daily active users of the platform also have the option to add a Bitcoin (BTC) address directly to their profiles.
