The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has filed a lawsuit against Amazon to force the electronic retailer to recall hundreds of thousands of dangerous products sold on its platform.
According to ArabiaNet, the CPSC has voted to file an administrative complaint, saying the Seattle e-commerce giant is legally responsible for the recalls because they pose a serious health risk to consumers. It may cause injury or death.
The products included 24,000 carbon monoxide detectors that did not work properly, about 400,000 hair dryers that lacked protection against shocks and electrocution, and several nightwear Children that could catch on fire, according to the CPSC.
We must deal with these massive third-party platforms more efficiently, and in the best way to protect American consumers who depend on them, said Robert Adler, acting president of the CPSC. Reuters.
The regulator added that Amazon had taken unspecified actions for some products, but they were not enough.
Amazon, for its part, said in a statement that it was unclear why the CPSC rejected its offer to expand the return program, including for products sold by third parties, or sue Judicial measures to impose almost completely repetitive measures of what it has taken.
The company said it has removed the vast majority of the products in question from its store and has offered customers full refunds.
Britain's competition regulator has launched a formal investigation into Alphabet's Google and Amazon over concerns that the tech giants were not doing enough to combat fake ratings on their locations.
