Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany will be completed in the near future.
According to Reuters, work on the pipeline was suspended after US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on it in December.
Separately, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Tuesday that his country has a sovereign right to decide on energy sources.
This comes in light of American fears that the extension of the natural gas pipeline will increase the political and economic influence of Russia in Europe.
During a joint press conference with his counterpart Lavrov in Moscow, Maas said, "sanctions between the partners are definitely the wrong way ... in the end it remains to determine the source from which we get energy." A sovereign decision for us.
He added that no country has the right to dictate energy policy to Europe via threats, it will not work.
