Dubai International Airport managed to regain momentum during the past year (2021), as the world's busiest airport handled international travel, with about 29.1 million passengers last year, An increase of 12.7% over the year 2020.
According to a statement issued by the state-owned Dubai Airports Company, today, Tuesday, the numbers were supported by strong performance in the fourth quarter, which represented more than a third of the total traffic in last year.
The increase in traffic, which also exceeds the expectations of Dubai airports of 28 million passengers, indicates that people are keen to travel despite the ongoing pandemic.
The airport is Emirates' main hub and handles flights operated by 84 airlines to 198 international destinations.
Last December was the busiest month for traffic, as the airport handled 4.5 million passengers to and from Dubai.
During the fourth quarter of 2021, the quarterly passenger traffic exceeded 10 million for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.
The movement through the airport was supported by the return of Dubai to open its doors to tourists in July 2020, and in light of the imposition of relatively light health restrictions that made Dubai a destination for tourists.
Demand is still very low compared to the airport's passenger traffic in 2019 of 86.4 million.
The administration expects about 60 million passengers to pass through the airport this year.
