The number of foreigners who left the Saudi labor market reached nearly a million in 2018.
According to the labor market bulletin for the fourth quarter of 2018 issued by the General Authority for Statistics in Saudi Arabia, about 987.9 thousand foreigners exited the labor market during the aforementioned year.
By the end of 2018, the total foreign workers in the Kingdom were about 9.43 million, compared to 10.42 million in 2017.
Around 1.09 million foreign men, males, exited the Saudi labor market during 2018, while 97.3 thousand females entered.
The same bulletin showed that the unemployment rate in Saudi Arabia decreased to 12.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018 from 12.8 percent in the third quarter of the same year.
Saudi Arabia is working to close different fields of work for expatriates, who constitute a third of the population, in light of its endeavor to provide job opportunities for Saudi youth and reduce unemployment rates among its citizens.
The economic reform plan announced by the Kingdom in 2016 aims to create a million new jobs for Saudis in the retail sector by the year 2020.
In the Kingdom, about 11 million people, mostly from Asia and other parts of the Arab world, work in the majority of them in low-wage jobs, where the Saudis alienate them, such as some construction and domestic jobs. A small percentage are employed in middle and high level management positions.
