European stocks suffered their first weekly loss in eight weeks, on Friday, as investors received a wide range of conflicting global economic data, in a turbulent start to the new year after a strong rise in 2023.
The European STOXX 600 index closed 0.3 percent lower, trimming some of its losses after falling by more than 1 percent during the day, with a weekly decline of 0.5 percent.
The retail and chemicals sectors were the biggest losers among sectors during the day, and the retail sector topped the weekly losses.
What helped limit losses today, banking shares rose 0.4 percent, while media sector shares gained 0.3 percent.
