Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday that his country will not build new coal-fired power projects abroad.

In his speech to the United Nations General Assembly yesterday, Xi Jinping reiterated his country's commitments to combat climate change.

The Chinese president did not provide any details, but the move could severely restrict funding for coal-fired power plants in developing countries.

Xi Jin's announcement followed similar moves by South Korea and Japan earlier this year.

He said in a videotaped speech at the annual meeting of the United Nations that China will intensify support for other developing countries in developing environmentally friendly and low-carbon energy, and will not build new coal-fired power projects in abroad.
