The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose to a record closing high on Tuesday, for the third straight session, as investors digested a mixed set of early quarterly results and awaited a slew of other company reports this week.
The index rose 0.29 percent to close at 4,864.59 points.
The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.43 percent to 15,425.94 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.25 percent to 37,905.45 points.
