United Airlines has warned that it may lay off about 36,000 employees, or nearly half of its workforce, as travel continues to deteriorate due to the Corona virus.

According to ArabiaNet, the prospects for improved air traffic in the United States have diminished with the increase in Corona virus infections during the past weeks and the re-closings in a number of states.

US law requires employees to be notified of the possibility of being laid off 60 days ago.

United Airlines is also prohibited from laying off employees or reducing wages until next October, as a condition of receiving US $ 5 billion in support from the US government.

The company said, in a memo to the employees, that some employees may be called back to work, but that will depend on the return of the request to travel.
